BIOGRAPHY
Marcia Wilson, (1937 to 2018), was an accomplished artist. She was also a writer, an instructor, and an influencer. Her many talents included drawing, painting, etching, jewelry making, woodcarving, bookmaking, silk screen, photography, quilting and printmaking.
Although born in Rochester, New York, Marcia moved at an early age to her spiritual home and “happy place”, Leonia, New Jersey. Her parents were active in the Leonia community. Her father, Earl C. Sandmer, served for a time on the Leonia Town Council, and for many years her mother was a volunteer with the ambulance corps. Along with her sister, Audrey, Marcia matriculated through Anna C. Scott School. Leonia Middle School and Leonia High School. She was accepted to Vassar College, and In 1958 received her B. A. in Art History. After graduation she did further study atvarious adult, Ed classes, as well as Hunter College, New York University graduate school of education the Art Students League in Manhattan, Rutgers University Center for Advanced Printmaking.
Marcia was the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, taught at the Newark Museum arts workshop, and was an Artist in Residence at the Newark Museum.
Ftom 1979 to 1983 she worked for the Bergen Record newspaper inHackensack, New Jersey, as tcorrespondent reporter.
1990, Marcia Sandmeyer Wilson begins to write and illustrated her own books, mostly memoirs with a sly, self depreciating wit. She self publishing them with computer and photo copy. She also learned bookbinding and created unique deluxe books, composed of original etchings, hand bound, with self-marbled endpages.
After living life on her own terms she was diagnosed with a terminal illness. She ended her life the way she lived it, as she wished but a little too soon. She died in her favorite place, her own bed in her own room in the house in her beloved Leonia with a little dog keeping her company until the end, and she left a lot to remember her by. Her spirit lives on for those who look at her work and find it interesting. She always loved to be the center of attention.
